Interface language for a research tool that never interrupts
The brief
Research software is usually built for the demo, not the eighth hour of use. We prototyped an interface language where hierarchy is carried by type and spacing instead of colour, and where motion exists only to explain where something came from.
Approach
- 01Reduced the palette to paper, ink and one signal colour reserved exclusively for destructive or irreversible actions.
- 02Defined a motion contract: 180ms for state, 320ms for position, 520ms for context — nothing else is permitted.
- 03Shipped the system as 62 documented components with contrast and keyboard behaviour specified per state.
Outcome
A design system spec plus a clickable prototype covering nine core flows, tested against WCAG 2.2 AA.
